As Mark Twain once said “There is no such thing as a new idea” Leadership styles and methods have been talked about and discussed for generations. So what is leadership? What differentiates a good leader from a bad leader? How can you become a good leader? Can you become a good leader or is it instinctive? The questions are unlimited, as are the writings and courses on the subject matter. Which all points to the fact that it is probably the most important single factor to lasting business success. With the 4IR beginning to take hold and change management something which businesses are going to have to become adept at, it is likely to become even more important.

Leadership sits in the very heart of the “3CirclesofSuccess”, representing the heartbeat of the business pulling everything together. Leadership style will dictate the culture of the business which in turn dictates the values of the business which dictates where your business sits in the market you operate in.

Perhaps the most intriguing question is, can it be learnt? There is a lot of material written about leadership and numerous courses which can help people to develop techniques and build their own confidence to take a more prominent role. But if you take a cross section of quality successful leaders they can all be very different. Perhaps it is here that the answer lies, successful leaders know their own strengths and weaknesses, they play to their strengths, work on their weaknesses and know when to seek support, but above all they are themselves and are comfortable in their own skins and they don’t believe they know all the answers but they find the answers.

This section is not “How to be a leader”, but an attempt to help you reflect on your situation, position and the type of leader which best suites you and is needed for your business. The section is deliberately provocative, asks questions and not give answers, the nearest you will get to an answer is an idea of what might be.
